The Rabbinical Alliance of America—Igud HaRabbonim, representing over 950 American rabbis—commends New York State Assembly Member Brian Cunningham’s repudiation of BDS, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel, by withdrawing his support of Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou. Niou has openly stated that she supports BDS against Israel. As a result of that support, Assembly Member Brian Cunningham withdrew his endorsement of Niou’s candidacy for Congress, declaring, “I will not support a candidate that fails to recognize our democratic ally’s right to exist.”
Rabbi Mendy Mirocznik, executive vice-president of the Rabbinical Alliance of America stated, “the Rabbinical Alliance of America praises Assembly Member Cunningham’s decision to rescind his support and endorsement of his colleague Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou Congressional bid over her support of BDS. It is important for all public figures to denounce this damaging attempt to destroy a flourishing democracy in the Middle East. BDS is nothing more than economic terrorism, an attempt to destroy Israel through economic force. Its very nature is to deny the legitimacy of Israel’s right to exist as a free and independent country. Sadly, this BDS movement has become popular and trendy in some political and academic circles. Assembly Member Cunningham’s important statement about BDS should serve as a model to other politicians and public figures, who cannot allow this hateful political ideology to affect policy.
“In these transformative days, when more Arab countries than ever are making peace with Israel, BDS only serves to weaken the progress being made in the Middle East. True lovers of peace and humanity will celebrate that many Arab countries are exploring avenues of peaceful relations with Israel. We are living in historic times and BDS supporters are trying to frustrate this positive reality and set the clock back to a time of war and instability in the Middle East. Not only does BDS work against peace, it attempts to weaken and even destroy Israel—America’s true, trusted, and stable friend in the Middle East. The Rabbinical Alliance of America therefore commends Assembly Member Cunningham’s rescindment of his endorsement of Yhu-Line Niou over her support for BDS. The only way that true and everlasting peace will be achieved in the Middle East is when we support Israel, stand with Israel and denounce BDS and other obstacles to peace.”
